Candles Around Pets: How to Use Fragrance Thoughtfully

Fragrance Is Not One-Size-Fits-All

Many of us enjoy using candles to make a home feel warmer and more inviting. When animals share that space, however, fragrance should be used thoughtfully.

No fragranced candle is appropriate for every pet. Dogs, cats, birds, and other animals can have different sensitivities, health conditions, and reactions to scent. Room size, ventilation, burn time, and fragrance strength can also affect the experience.

For that reason, CharGlow does not describe any fragranced candle as universally pet-safe.

Essential Oils and Fragrance Oils Create Different Experiences

CharGlow offers two intentionally different candle collections.

The Signature Collection is made with essential oils and activated charcoal. These candles are lightly scented and designed to create a softer fragrance experience.

The Escape Collection uses fragrance oils to create richer, more layered scents with a stronger presence in the room.

Essential oils are naturally derived, but “natural” does not automatically mean risk-free. Concentrated essential oils can be harmful to animals, and strong fragrances of different kinds may irritate sensitive pets. The finished formula, fragrance strength, exposure, and individual animal all matter.

Why Signature May Be the Better Starting Point

For homes with dogs or cats, we generally recommend beginning with the Signature Collection because it is intentionally lightly scented.

This recommendation is based on the softer fragrance experience—not a guarantee that every Signature candle will be appropriate for every animal.

Signature currently includes blends featuring lavender, cedarwood, and geranium. These ingredients should not be described as universally safe for pets. Even lavender can cause problems when directly ingested or encountered in concentrated forms, and cats can be particularly sensitive to essential oils.

How to Use Candles Thoughtfully Around Pets

When burning any candle in a home with animals:

  • Use it in a well-ventilated room.
  • Make sure your pet can leave the area freely.
  • Keep the flame, vessel, wax, and lid out of reach.
  • Avoid placing candles near pet beds, crates, feeding areas, or enclosed spaces.
  • Begin with a shorter burn time and observe your pet.
  • Keep the candle away from wagging tails, curious paws, and unstable surfaces.
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended.

Strong odors or fragrances may cause symptoms such as watery eyes, nasal irritation, coughing, wheezing, drooling, vomiting, or changes in breathing in sensitive animals.

Know When to Stop

Extinguish the candle and ventilate the room if your pet shows signs of discomfort, including:

  • Coughing or sneezing.
  • Watery eyes or nose.
  • Wheezing or unusual breathing.
  • Drooling or vomiting.
  • Restlessness, hiding, or unusual behavior.

Contact your veterinarian promptly if breathing appears difficult or symptoms are significant.

Extra Caution for Certain Animals

Consult your veterinarian before using fragranced products around pets with:

  • Asthma or another respiratory condition.
  • Neurological conditions.
  • Known fragrance sensitivities.
  • A history of reactions to essential oils or scented products.

Bird owners should be especially cautious. Birds have highly sensitive respiratory systems, and scented candles or sprays may present serious risks.

Choosing Between CharGlow Collections

Choose Signature when you prefer a lighter, more subtle fragrance experience.

Choose Escape when you want a richer, more noticeable fragrance presence.

Whichever collection you select, thoughtful placement, ventilation, supervision, and attention to your pet’s behavior remain important.

Every household—and every animal—is different. The best candle experience is one that keeps both the atmosphere and the animals in the home comfortable.
